ANSI and CSA Compliant Guard Opening Scale (KSC098) –
An ANSI and CSA guard opening scale is a valuable tool to use during the design, installation, and inspection of guards to make sure they comply with ANSI and CSA safety standards. This folding guard-opening scale is based on “A Review of Machine-Guarding Recommendations” by Donald R. Vaillancourt and Stover H. Snook of the Liberty Mutual Research Center for Safety and Health.
ANSI B11-series safety standards and ANSI/RIA R15.06 safety standard for industrial robots and robot systems utilize the guard-opening data from Vaillancourt and Snook’s studies. The Canadian power press standard, CSA Z142-02 also uses the data from this study.
When a guard is used as the primary safeguarding method, it must be designed, constructed, adjusted, and maintained so that someone cannot reach under, over, around, or through the guard. Any openings created by the guards must be checked for compliance with ANSI/CSA safety standards.
